CHAMPION DENIED A REPEAT KALL KWIK VICTORY

Castleton rally driver Ryan Champion overcame treacherous conditions in the snow bound forests of his native Yorkshire yesterday only to succumb to a mechanical problem whilst well in command on the Kall Kwik National Rally.

Driving the MSR Motorsport prepared Champions of Castleton Mitsubishi Lancer Evo 6 that took him and Northallerton co driver Larry Carter to victory twelve months previous, the team made an eleventh hour decision to run on snow tyres for the opening pair of stages in Dalby.

Leaving the Pickering start ramp, it appeared that the threatening snow showers were not materialising but as soon as Champion hit the stages, it proved the correct choice as the forest tracks were mainly covered in snow.

The pair emerged from the Newclose stage some 31 seconds in the lead and after service, Champion continued his charge through SS3 whereby once again he was streets quicker than the opposition. However, half a mile from the end of the Gale Rigg stage the Lancer jammed in gear leaving the pair stranded and out of the rally.

I was questioning my judgement when there appeared to be very little snow about on the way to SS1 and then as soon as we were into the stage, it turned out to be an inspired choice as it was quite deep in places. From then on, we just had to keep it neat and tidy and the rally was ours but it wasnt to be said a disconsolate Ryan.

The MSR team have just four days to effect repairs to the car as Champion will be in action at the opening round of the Mitsubishi Ralliart Evolution Challenge which takes place with the Bournemouth based Rallye Sunseeker this weekend.

Ryan will team up with the experienced Craig Thorley in a bid for the championship which will see the winner gain a works supported Mitsubishi drive in the 2006 British Rally Championship.
